The 2-Minute Rule

The hardest part of every action is the first 2 minutes.

Reserve 10 minutes at the end of every meeting to complete the first 2 minutes of each action.

Two types of actions

  1. You can do it alone.

  2. The action requires somebody else.

Action you can do alone

Can you complete in less than 2 minutes? Do it right now.

More than 2 minutes?

  1. Estimate how long will it take.

  2. Add that time onto your calendar.

  3. Title of event is the name of the action. (e.g. "Write client proposal")

Action requires somebody else

Do you have an upcoming meeting scheduled with them? Add the action to the agenda.

If you don't have a meeting scheduled soon enough, you need to message them.

Can you message them in less than 2 mins? Send it immediately.

If writing a message takes more than 2 minutes:

  1. Estimate how long it will take to write

  2. Add that time onto your calendar

  3. Title of event is name of the action (e.g. Draft email to leadership team)

Now you have momentum

The action is started and much more likely to be completed on time.
